An Afro-centric account of Kimpa Vita’s life, told from her father’s perspective. A soldier, politically aware and part of the ruling class, Kimpa Vita’s father blames himself for his daughter’s strength and rebellious nature. He feels guilt for her failed marriages. When his daughter gains a following large enough to threaten the king and church, he fears for her future. As he floats down the Kongo river with her ashes, his confused and often angry thoughts cross between recollection, magic, and fanciful hope. This is a darker, more controversial account of Kimpa Vita’s story, reimagined from the original edition.
